API Is Expanding Its Global ReachExpanding Access, Opportunity, and Collaboration Worldwide The Association for Pathology Informatics (API) is proud to announce a major expansion of its global initiatives—strengthening access, opportunity, and inclusion for pathology informatics professionals around the world. Since its founding, API has been driven by a belief that collaboration, education, and innovation thrive when diverse voices come together. What began as a small but passionate community has grown into a global network of professionals advancing the science and practice of pathology informatics across borders, disciplines, and healthcare systems. Today, API is taking the next step in that evolution by expanding its global reach through three coordinated initiatives designed to reduce barriers and support colleagues in low- and middle-income countries:
Together, these programs reflect API’s commitment to building a truly inclusive global community. “When I first became involved with API, our community was small but deeply committed to the idea that informatics could transform pathology and healthcare,” said Nova Smith, Executive Director of API. “Watching API grow into a diverse, international organization has been one of the greatest privileges of my career. Expanding our global reach is a natural extension of our mission, ensuring that geography and resources are not barriers to learning, collaboration, or contribution.” "API's Global Access Membership provides opportunities for international pathologists to gain exposure to pathology informatics expertise outside their home country for whom local expertise is limited." added Jenny Weon, MD, Co-Chair of the API Membership Committee. "The membership will help pathologists gain insights into best practices for implementing the latest technological developments in pathology, how to effectively oversee and utilize pathology-related data to improve diagnostics, and how to educate the next generation of pathology informaticists. The goal of Global Access Membership is to foster a collaborative global community of pathologists around the world and accelerate the advancement of pathology informatics." Global Access Membership: Connecting a Worldwide Community
API’s Global Access Membership is designed to welcome pathologists, scientists, and technical professionals from low- and middle-income countries into the organization. To support the launch, Global Access Membership is being offered free through June 30, 2026, after which it will remain available at a very low annual cost. Members receive full access to API’s educational resources, member communications, discounts on Journal of Pathology Informatics manuscripts, reduced registration fees for the API Summit and DPAI Workshop, and opportunities to engage through committees and API Council service. “API’s Global Access Membership unlocks a world of possibilities,” said Lisa-Jean Clifford, President of API. “It connects pathology professionals across continents, creating a network for learning, mentorship, and international collaboration. This isn’t just about access—it’s about building a global community that drives progress, improves equity, and opens doors for impactful careers in pathology.” “International global access membership at API is vital for sharing expertise, technology, and best practices across borders,” added Kareem Hosny, MD, Co-Chair of the API Membership Committee. “By engaging professionals in underserved regions, we foster collaboration, strengthen diagnostic capabilities, and accelerate the adoption of modern informatics solutions worldwide across both anatomical and clinical pathology.” Expanding Beyond Membership: Travel and Publication Support In addition to membership access, API is expanding support through Global Access Travel Awards, helping professionals from low-resource countries attend API meetings, workshops, and educational events in person—recognizing the value of face-to-face collaboration and community building. API is also offering JPI APC publication waivers for authors from low-resource countries, helping ensure that important research, innovations, and perspectives can be shared globally without prohibitive publication costs. Building the Future of Pathology Informatics—Together API’s growth has always been shaped by the people who participate, contribute, and collaborate within its community. By expanding access to membership, travel, and publication opportunities, API is investing in a more connected, equitable, and innovative future for pathology informatics worldwide.
