2026 Lifetime Achievement Award J. Mark Tuthill, MD, Henry Ford Health
The Association for Pathology Informatics is honored to present the 2026 API Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. J. Mark Tuthill in recognition of his exceptional leadership, innovation, and enduring contributions to the field of pathology informatics. Dr. Tuthill completed his pathology residency and informatics fellowship at the University of Vermont College of Medicine–Fletcher Allen Health Care, where he established the institution’s Division of Pathology Informatics. Notably, he was among the first to pursue a “virtual” pathology informatics fellowship, mentored by Dr. Bruce Friedman, a pioneering leader in the field. He currently serves as Division Head of Pathology Informatics at Henry Ford Health in Detroit, where he has led advancements in digital pathology, laboratory information systems, electronic health records, and data-driven healthcare solutions. A charter member of API, Dr. Tuthill has been instrumental in shaping the organization since its inception. He served as API President in 2005 and has chaired numerous committees, including Membership and Education. Since 2014, he has been a driving force behind the Pathology Informatics Summit as Co-Conference Director, helping to elevate it as a premier forum for education and collaboration. His longstanding service also includes contributions to the Journal of Pathology Informatics as an editorial board member and reviewer. Beyond API, Dr. Tuthill remains active in organized medicine, serving as a Delegate to the Wayne Medical Society and contributing to the CDC’s Clinical Laboratory Improvement Advisory Committee (CLIAC). A respected thought leader, educator, and mentor, he has played a pivotal role in advancing informatics training and fostering the next generation of leaders in the field. Dr. Tuthill’s distinguished career is matched by his dedication to family and personal passions, including music, nature, golf, yoga, and travel, which he enjoys sharing with Linda, his wife of over 35 years, and their five children and extended family. In recognition of his visionary leadership, dedication and sustained service, and profound and enduring impact on pathology informatics as a specialty, API proudly celebrates Dr. Tuthill as the 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.
