The Year of the Lab: Impact during COVID-19
March 24, 2021 | 1:00 pm ET / 10:00 am PT The COVID-19 pandemic stressed many segments of the U.S. healthcare enterprise, not the least of which has been clinical laboratories who have dealt with lack of available assays and other supply chain issues, regulatory challenges, shifting and virtual workload, and more. However, in-system laboratories across the country rose to the occasion, providing critical diagnoses for COVID and other health conditions, and enabled their healthcare systems to continue to provide care, with immense clinical and financial impact. IT support for these efforts was significant, and included documentation and billing of test results, EMR alerts, data management, and interaction with public health labs and health system executives.
We need to reflect on this past year, recognize the fundamental impact of the lab on our healthcare systems, and prepare ourselves for the future. Lessons from this year will help us prepare for future viral pandemics, as well as improve the delivery of standard healthcare. Dr. Karen Kaul will address these and other points in her lecture and will also respond to questions put to her by the virtual audience.
Speaker: Karen Kaul MD, PhD Chair, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Duckworth Family Chair NorthShore University Health System Clinical Professor of Pathology University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine

Betting on the future of the Lab. Reimbursement and financial challenges in the game of value-based care
April 28, 2021 | 1:00 pm ET / 10:00 am PT
As a laboratory professional, you know the reimbursement and financial challenges associated with laboratory testing. As we continue the move towards value-based care, laboratories need to be leaders, not laggards, in order to win. It’s time to double-down and build the right strategic game plan that delivers on the best financial and operational return for your organization, and more importantly for the delivery of higher quality care, improved patient safety and outcomes for the community served.
Lab leaders need to consider or understand the impact of:
- Emerging payment models
- Current state of value payment models
- Emerging technology, such as AI
- Lab versus centralized IT
- Importance and awareness of laboratory data impact, regardless of source, throughout the care continuum

Business and Clinical Analytics as Key Components of Lab Operations
June 9, 2021 | 1:00 pm ET / 10:00 am PT
Business analytics is a key element in optimizing clinical lab operations. Driven by a variety of software, data mining techniques, and visualizations, such processes are essential to laboratory quality and efficiency. In this one-hour presentation, Dr. Tuthill will present the philosophy behind analytics development as well as several case studies in which analytics is deployed in the Henry Ford Health System laboratories. He will also address in-house development of analytic tools as well as the role of vendor provided solutions.
Lab leaders need to consider or understand:
- Where to start, what to measure
- The role of in-house analytics tools, today and in the future
- Importance and awareness of laboratory analytics throughout the care continuum
Woven through the discussion will be an emphasis on ways to measure the benefits of the software as well as deployment challenges.

Population Health: How Labs Play an Integral Role in Supporting Better Care
August 18, 2021 | 1:00 pm ET / 10:00 am PT
Population health management refers to the process of improving the clinical health outcomes of a defined group of individuals through improved care coordination and patient engagement supported by relevant financial and patient care data. The definition of population health is now being expanded to include tasks such as management of public health challenges such as COVID-19 and wellness programs in which the laboratories play essential roles.
On August 18 at 1:00pm ET, Sunquest and API will continue their free virtual series for 2021 with a new webinar entitled: “Population Health: How Labs Play an Integral Role in Supporting Better Care”
During this webinar, speaker Dr. Myra Wilkerson will discuss the role that laboratory professionals can play in population health by developing value-based payment models and pursuing value-based care.
Speakers: Myra L. Wilkerson, MD Geisinger Medical Laboratories
Moderated by: Bruce A. Friedman, MD Emeritus Professor of Pathology University of Michigan Medical School

Integrated Diagnostics: Transforming the Future of Clinical Decision-Making
October 13, 2021 | 1:00 pm ET / 10:00 am PT
On October 13 at 1:00pm ET, Sunquest and API will continue their free virtual series for 2021 with a new webinar entitled: “Integrated Diagnostics: Transforming the Future of Clinical Decision-Making”
Integrated diagnostics can improve the quality of cancer care for patients, offering better clinical interpretation with actionable results accompanied by better monitoring and surveillance. Unfortunately, clinical interpretation is not easily mass-produced, and human curation for integrated diagnostics takes time and effort.
During this webinar, we will show how computational integrated diagnostics effort at MSKCC, automating the merger of radiology, laboratory, pathologic, and genomic has resulted in a curated, live, dynamic diagnostic interface supporting providers who determine treatment and patient surveillance.
Speakers from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center will discuss the role that laboratory professionals can play in integrated diagnostics and efficiencies gained for clinical interpretation and treatment plans.

S. Joseph Sirintrapun, M.D. Director of Pathology Informatics
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
Aijazudden Syed, M.A. Senior Leader, Bioinformatics Software
